Sometimes it’s hard to define the problem, and we need clarity to choose a path forward.

Assessment can be a powerful tool for gaining insight, self-awareness, and direction. It may illuminate what’s been hard to name, help you get un-stuck, validate your experiences, and support meaningful change by better understanding what is most important.

Our process is fully customized, tailored to your specific needs, using comprehensive, evidence-based tools. We see our role as arranging and connecting puzzle pieces - and maybe even finding missing ones - so we can complete the image, bring it into focus, or zoom out to see the bigger picture.

We aim to help you understand existing patterns or experiences - and shine light on strengths and assets that may enhance movement toward your goals.

Assessment may be a good fit if you…

  • Feel different from others or misunderstood in how you perceive or experience the world

  • Want to improve your performance at school or work, address areas in which you struggle, or more fully realize your potential

  • Wish to identify the right career, job, or environments that might be best for you

  • Sense that something deeper is going on but haven’t been able to find an explanation

  • Want to better understand your thought patterns, personality, emotional reactions, or relationship dynamics

  • Wonder whether you may be neuro-divergent (e.g., ADHD or autism)

  • Feel stuck in therapy and want additional insight to guide your treatment

Gain insight to guide your next move.

our approach

Let’s find the answers together.

The goal of psychological testing is to develop an accurate understanding of diagnosis, clarify contributing factors, and create a treatment plan that is specific, meaningful, and actionable. Specialized evaluations can help you better understand how you think, learn, relate, and perceive the world around you. With this insight, many clients find they are better able to:

  • Inform their psychological/psychiatric care

  • Make informed decisions

  • Improve emotional regulation and relationships

  • Advocate for their needs

  • Work toward personal, academic, or professional goals

  • Our first step is an initial consultation with you - and the referring professional, if there is one - to fully understand the questions you want answered and clarify the assessment goals.

  • We develop a customized protocol, specific to your questions and needs. Testing can range from 2-8 hours, depending upon the issues, and usually is completed in 1-3 sessions. Our clinicians then analyze and synthesize the results to draw meaningful conclusions.

  • A feedback meeting enables the clinician to share what was learned with you, and if relevant, the referring professional. Your assessing clinician will share findings and what they mean specifically in your life and for your future. You will be invited to ask questions, clarify, and reflect on how you might use the information. You will also receive a written summary of the testing feedback.

Frequently asked questions

  • Many insurance plans include coverage for assessment or testing. Exceptions typically include career and couples assessments. If your plan reimburses for the type of testing you seek, they may require a pre-authorization, which our team can help you to secure. During your initial consultation, your clinician will gather the information needed to determine if your insurance plan offers coverage for your testing services.

  • As part of the initial consultation process, we typically ask for your authorization to check in with your provider, especially if they have referred you for testing, to better understand what questions they would like answered on your behalf and to gain their perspective on the information we aim to gather. Once the testing is complete, we will provide a written repot that you can share with your provider. We are also happy to arrange a feedback meeting with your provider, typically via telehealth.

  • We approach our work with awareness of the importance of context. Your personal identity, culture, background, and experiences shape who you are in the world, and so it is important for us to view the assessment results through a lens that incorporates your unique contexts. We also aim to use assessment tools that are free of cultural and language biases.

  • Our methods vary, depending upon the type of testing. Most assessment involves a combination of self-report questionnaires or surveys, guided tasks, an in-depth interview or conversation with the clinician, and reflective activities.

  • Only you have access to your written report, unless you provide written consent for us to share it with someone else, such as a therapist, school staff, or a family member. Some clients choose to share their report to support a request for accommodations on a standardized exam or to access services or resources.

  • The goal of assessment is to be meaningful and helpful to you. Your clinician will put together and interpret data from different sources to make sense of it in the unique context of who you are. While we want your report to be understandable and clear, we also follow standard protocols for how to discuss certain topics, such as cognitive function - and that means we may occasionally use a word that sounds like professional “jargon.” Your feedback meeting is an opportunity for your clinician to clarify their findings and recommendations and to gain your perspective on the results. If something does not “feel like you,” the clinician may provide an example to clarify their meaning or work with you to put the idea into different words that make more sense to you. Assessment tools also have limitations, and if something does not resonate with you, perhaps a specific data point could be interpreted in more than one way or is inconclusive. In this case, your feedback can be helpful in further refining our conclusions.

  • Most assessments are valid for a specific period of time. If you participated in testing previously, it is important for your clinician to know which tests were used to ensure that our testing process will be valid. While some data should be stable across our lives, our responses can be impacted by development, life stage, trauma, stress, injury, illness, or mood concerns. Comparing our results with your prior results can be incredibly informative in understanding your current experiences, contexts, and struggles.
